RURAL PLANTATION STIMULATES STEAMY MOLOKA'I MORNINGS

MOLOKA'I COFFEE RECEIVES TOP RATINGS

For over twenty years the Moloka'i Coffee Plantation, located near the town of Kualapu'u on the island of Moloka'i, has nurtured its delicate Arabica coffee plants, creating a product that now rivals some of the best in the industry. Malulani Estate, the flagship coffee of the Moloka'i Coffee Plantation, recently received a superior "cupping" result of 89 by the Coffee Review, a coffee rating service dedicated to educating and providing the food service and coffee industries with expert and objective reviews from experienced individuals. The high rating that Moloka'i Coffee Plantation has received puts it on even footing with many of its well known rivals, local and national. The quality of Moloka'i Coffee Plantation's product has attracted attention in the State of Hawai'i, delighting both local residents and state officials.

"An avid coffee drinker myself, I serve only Moloka'i Coffee Plantation roasts as the official coffee in my office. I appreciate it for the bold and distinct flavor specific to Moloka'i, and for its ability to wake me up in the morning before I face my legislative duties," commented Senator J. Kalani English (6th Senatorial District: East and Upcountry Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i, Kaho'olawe).

An important industry in Hawai'i, coffee plantations continue to provide valuable local jobs and serve as productive and profitable agricultural ventures. As an emerging company in this industry, Moloka'i Coffee Plantation's commitment to quality serves to propel its progress in the market, and continues to uphold the tradition of excellence expected from Hawaiian agricultural products. "The Moloka'i Coffee Plantation has great potential to play a major role in the specialty coffee industry, and is under appreciated for its efforts to maintain the high standards of quality inherent in its product," commented Ted Liu, Director of the State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

As an eco-friendly business all of the five hundred acres of coffee plants are grown using drip irrigation, which conserves the island's precious water supply. Moloka'i Coffee Plantation strives to protect the unique micro-climate of the island, responsible for its coffee's rich flavor, by recycling all of its green field and milling waste for use as organic fertilizer in the fields. "As the Chair of the Energy and Environment Committee for the Senate, I am pleased that the Moloka'i Coffee Plantation recognizes the importance of integrating the needs of business with the needs of the environment, and has taken such progressive steps in this direction. As we move forward, this principle will become increasingly important in the business world," remarked Senator English. The vigilance with which Moloka'i Coffee Plantation guards and nourishes its pristine environment, is also exhibited in their state of the art harvesting techniques, designed to pick only the ripest coffee berries without damaging the plant itself. These ripe berries are then sorted by two distinct processes, the traditional dry process and the more modern wet process, both of which capture only the highest quality coffee beans for use in its first rate blends, resulting in an impressive product that is swiftly making a name for itself. It has been exported as far as Europe, Asia and the mainland United States. "Hawai'i has long been renowned for superior agricultural products, and it is no surprise that the Moloka'i Coffee Plantation, through their own hard work and dedication to excellence, have matched and even exceeded the highest standard of quality for the local and international coffee enthusiast," concluded Senator English.Ê
