PRESS RELEASE
April 4, 2003
Senator J. Kalani English, Chairperson of the Senate's Energy and Environment Committee, today announced that a public hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday, April 9, 2003 at 2:45 p.m. in Room 229 of the State Capitol, to receive public testimony on partnering with industry to address two key environmental issues: reduction of emissions from the production of electricity and use of motor vehicles, and a request to the Legislative Research Bureau of the Legislature for a study and information gathering of current laws pertaining to the cruise ship industry, used by other states and governments around the world. Senator English expressed his appreciation to Senator Roz Baker, Chairperson of the Senate Health Committee and Sen. Cal Kawamoto, Chairperson of the Senate Transportation, Military, and Government Affairs Committee, for agreeing to schedule this hearing. English noted,
"As much as possible, we want to work in partnership with the respective industries and their leaders, rather than government acting as the intervenor, to protect Hawaii's unique environment. I believe that these industries' leaders, as corporate citizens who live and do business here, are equally interested in maintaining Hawaii's clean air and healthy oceans. Thus, I am hopeful that through this collaboration, we can adopt the best practices within their respective industries that will support their economic viability, while also ensuring that we remain committed to maintaining a healthy environment for our residents and for our visitors."
Testimony on the following measures:
S.C.R. 164/S.R. 113, " Requesting the Convening of an Emission Task Force to Measure the State's Power Plant and Motor Vehicle Emissions and Develop Comprehensive Strategies to Reduce Emissions"
and;
S.C.R. 158/S.R. 107 "requesting a Review of Existing Legislation Regulating Cruise Ships and their Environmental Effects"
may be submitted to the Committees per the instructions on the hearing notice.
The April 9, 2003 hearing will be televised live on 'Olelo, Channel 53, O'ahu, and will be rebroadcast on outer islands via local community channels. Any further inquiries can be addressed to Senator J. Kalani English's office at (808) 587-7225.
