PRESS RELEASE
March 28, 2003
Senator J. Kalani English (East Maui, Molokai, and Lanai) today announced the release of $1,215,000 in state funds appropriated by the Legislature in the General Appropriations Act of 2002 to support capital improvement projects on the island of Molokai as follows:
Senator English expressed his appreciation to his colleagues on the Senate Ways and Means Committee who supported these requests and to Governor Linda Lingle for releasing the funds.
Senator English noted, "In our current environment of fiscal austerity, the Legislature and the Governor must make very difficult decisions regarding funding priorities for myriad worthy projects. The health care needs of people living in rural areas of our State, and especially those of native Hawaiians, must not be overlooked. Molokai General Hospital, as the only acute care facility located on the island of Molokai, is a critical component of our rural healthcare network". English added, "The installation of the long-awaited taxiway lighting system enhances on-site air traffic safety at Molokai Airport, especially in the event of less than optimal flight conditions. This additional safety mechanism is another step forward in improving the overall safety of air transportation for Molokai residents and visitors alike".
