District Informational Visits for Residents of Remote Areas

Representative Sol Kaho'ohalahala (Lanai, Molokai, and East Maui) and Senator J. Kalani English (East Maui, Molokai, and Lanai) will be visiting the remote areas of their districts for the purposes of providing important information about the need for personal safety and preparedness during wartime and the potential impacts on Hawaii of the ongoing war in Iraq. Senator English and Representative Kaho'ohalahala are committed to working in partnership to ensure that all of the residents within their districts are aware of these critical issues, therefore they will be participating in community forums between April 1 and April 10, 2003, as follows:

Tuesday, April 1, 7 – 9 p.m. – Haiku Community Center, Maui
Wednesday, April 2, 7 – 9 p.m. – Hana Community Center, Maui (Old Hana School Cafeteria)
Monday, April 7, 12 noon –2 p.m. – McVeigh Hall, Kalaupapa, Molokai
Monday, April 7, 7 – 9 p.m. – Kaunakakai Elementary School, Molokai
Thursday, April 10, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. – Senior Citizen Center, Lanai

Representative Kaho'ohalahala and Senator English will still be fulfilling their duties in Honolulu during this time to ensure that they are present for key legislative sessions, and will be making these district visits in the evening hours and during days the legislature is in recess.

Representative Kaho'ohalahala wants to ensure that "all our constituents are informed about the realities of how war can affect our lives now and in the future. Even though this war seems so distant, today's actions affect tomorrow's global relationships". Senator English agrees, noting, "our constituents, who reside in remote areas, understand perhaps more than those who live in urban areas, that in times of crisis, our people working together will ensure our safety and our survival". Representative Kaho'ohalahala and Senator English also recommend consulting the following website, http://www.ready.gov/, which provides information about how to prepare emergency supplies for a disaster and is useful in preparing for hurricanes and other natural disasters.
