PRESS RELEASE
March 21, 2003
Students at three island schools will soon be enjoying the benefits of improved accessibility to playground facilities, made possible from the March 3, 2003 release of funds by the Governor. Hana High and Elementary School will receive $1,056,000 for playground accessibility improvements and a new softball field, while Lana'i High and Elementary School and Pa'ia Elementary School will receive $238,600 and $245,600 respectively for playground accessibility improvements and for the removal of an old cesspool at Pa'ia Elementary.
Part of the 2002 State Budget, these funds resulted from efforts by Senator J. Kalani English (6th District, Hana, East & Upcountry Maui, Moloka'i, Lana'i & Kaho'olawe) to improve rural school facilities during the 2002 legislative session. "I am grateful to the Governor for recognizing the importance of maintaining our outer island school facilities, and am pleased that I am able to help improve conditions for the students at these schools," remarked Senator English.
State budget constraints have created a ration in Capital Improvement Projects across the state and have made them much sought after by legislators and residents alike. In the current economic state, providing for the needs of schools in all constituencies can be a difficult and arduous task, a task that requires the hard work and commitment of elected officials. "From my close contact with teachers over the years, I have learned that physical activity and fitness is a vital component of a balanced and healthy curriculum. Necessity dictates that students have adequate access to playgrounds because they perform much better academically when they have sufficient levels of physical activity throughout the day," commented Senator English.
