English to represent the only 'canoe district' in the Senate

(Hana, Maui) Senate Majority Floor Leader J. Kalani English announced today that he is a candidate for re-election to the State Senate. Under the new district boundaries, English will represent the 6th Senate district serving East Maui, Upcountry Maui, Molokai and Lanai.

"Kalani is bright and energetic with the skills and background to represent this diverse district. He provides a powerful voice for the people," said Dr. Emmett Aluli of Molokai General Hospital.

During his term at the Senate, English provided leadership on a range of economic, environmental, health and justice issues. His record of accomplishment is available online at kalanienglish.com.

After reapportionment, District 6 is the only 'canoe district' in the Senate. "I realize the challenges of representing constituents on different islands - remember, I served two terms on the Maui County Council which represents all four islands of Maui County," said English. "We need strong representation at the Capitol on O'ahu to have 'Neighbor Island' voices heard."

English has a background in diplomacy and works as an international business consultant. "Kalani's professional skills, his language abilities and his talent as a gifted negotiator and mediator are the same skills that make him such an effective legislator," said LeLei LeLaulu, president and CEO of Counterpart International, based in Washington, DC.

"Kalani is incredibly effective in the Senate. We need him to continue there so that Maui County will be part of the leadership at the Capitol," said Avery Chumbley. "He understands and he cares, that's why he's my favorite Senator," said, Amy Hanaialii Gilliom, award winning recording artist.

The Senator will be using his old headquarters in the old Kahului Shopping center, next to Ichiban restaurant, as his base of operations. "The headquarters will be open and functional within the next week -- everyone is welcomed," English said

The campaign kick-off will be a fundraiser at the Tavares Community Center in Pukalani on Wednesday, July 17, 2002 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Tickets are $25, and can be purchased at the door. We will have great food, great company and the best Na hokuhanohano award winning entertainment in the islands.
