Counterpart International
June 2003
Counterpart International launched its first initiative inside the United States this year with the completion of a strategic plan for the Ho'onipa'a No Hana Foundation, a community-based non-profit organization located in Hana, on the Island of Maui. The foundation, whose name means "to make steadfast," is dedicated to the preservation of Hana's Hawaiian culture, sacred sites, traditions and environmental stewardship.
Working with the Foundation's directors, Counterpart mapped out ways to conserve a 430 acre parcel of land donated by Hana resident and artist, Judith Kliban-Bixby. Counterpart also provided an organizational development plan for the Foundation to raise funds, recruit staff and set up office systems in provide community development projects on the land. Counterpart plans to provide expertise and hands-on assistance to the Foundation to launch Forest Gardens on the land, income-generating projects for young people in Hana, and cultural programs for the whole community.
Senator Kalani English, a CPI Advisory Council Member, was very instrumental in guiding Counterpart's first domestic program. As they say in the 50th state: "Mahalo."
