High school seniors celebrate graduation

"It's been a good time together," sang the senior students of Molokai High School as they performed their class song at their graduation ceremony last Saturday.

Over 100 students in gowns and mortarboards crossed the stage to receive their high school diplomas as a proud audience looked on.

Friends, family and guests – including Senator J. Kalani English and Maui County councilmember Danny Mateo – gathered in the Barn to celebrate the achievements of these students.

Class president Alea Arce was the first student to address the group. She spoke of her early high school days, the struggle and success, and her thanks for everyone who provided support. Finally, she wished the graduating class luck in their future.

"Move into the future with great pride. Always remember where you started. You should be proud to be a graduate of Molokai High School," said Arce.

Kristan Forsberg, Kelsy Takashima, Tierra Madani and Ayla Bicoy tied for highest grade point average; each student gave a valedictory address congratulating her class and wishing future success.

Also addressing the graduating class was student Arian Blair, the salutatorian with the second highest grade point average, and MHS alum Dr. Sonia Patel. '91. In her commencement address, Patel told students to always think positive.

"There is goodness in all of you. Like yourself and you will accomplish many good things," said Patel.

The ceremony came to an end when gradates received their diplomas, flipped their tassels to the left and sang the school's Alma Mater one last time.
