State senators Kalanai English and Jill Tokuda visited Molokai last week for a tour of the Molokai Irrigation System.
MIS Water Users Advisory Board Chair Adolph Helm and MIS Supervisor Byron Alcos led the tour.
English, who represents the largest district in the state, including Molokai, said that he wanted to demonstrate the system's fiscal needs for Tokuda, who now serves as chair for the state committee on Agriculture and Hawaiian Affairs.
The MIS is part of a statewide system that encompasses five irrigation systems, and funds it as such.
English, who has been vocal about the need to improve the system for years, said that the MIS has some major maintenance needs. For example, he said, exposed wires run along the Waikola Tunnel's ceiling and water on the tunnel floor; an obvious hazard.
English said the he thinks Senator Tokuda came away from the tour with a deeper understanding of the MIS.
The senators also took the opportunity to check out a number of agriculture-related businesses on Molokai, including Coffees of Hawaii.
"It was a good opportunity to expose Senator Tokuda to the needs of my district," English said.
