WAILUKU - Gov. Neil Abercrombie released $250,000 for the Nahiku Community Center.
Those funds will be thrown into the pot that already contains $250,000 from the county and another $280,000 in the proposed 2013 county budget. The total of $780,000 will get the center built, a news release from Mayor Alan Arakawa's said Thursday.
"It is always a pleasure to be able to work together with the state for the benefit of the community," said Arakawa. "The Nahiku community deserves this center, and I'm sure it will be well used by the people of East Maui."
Council Member Bob Carroll, whose residency seat includes Nahiku, thanked the mayor, his staff, state Sen. J. Kalani English, state Rep. Mele Carroll and the Nahiku Community Association.
"This will provide the residents of Nahiku with a place to meet, work and celebrate life," said Carroll.
English, too, lauded the state, county and the community.
"The much-needed center will greatly benefit everyone as it will serve as a gathering place for the community," he said.
Carroll said he expects the bidding process for center construction to begin soon.
