Bills proposed by Maui lawmakers would set bag limits and size restrictions for uhu and goatfish caught in waters off Maui.
Senate Bill 578, introduced by Senate President Shan Tsutsui and fellow Maui Sens. Roz Baker and J. Kalani English, would limit fishers to taking no more than two uhu, or parrotfish, and would set the same limit on three varieties of goatfish: kumu, moana ukali and munu. It would also set a size limit of 10 inches on those three species, and a limit of 12 inches on uhu.
A companion bill, HB694, was introduced in the state House by East Maui, Molokai and Lanai Rep. Mele Carroll.
Both types of fish can be harvested year-round, and two species of goatfish, moana ukali and munu, are currently unregulated, with no size restrictions.
"It's such a delicacy, and people really like uhu, so it's been overfished a bit," English said. "We're trying to make sure there's enough fish to regenerate."
