HONOLULU - The Board of Education voted Thursday night to take the Hana Public and School Library off a proposed closure list.
"We saved the Hana library," Mary Cochran, the Board of Education Neighbor Island representative from Maui, said in a telephone call almost immediately after a vote during a meeting in Honolulu.
More than 100 people filed written testimony Thursday against the Hana library closure. Testifying in person for the remote East Maui community were state Sen. J. Kalani English and state Rep. Mele Carroll, both of whom represent East Maui residents.
The legislators said the Hana library provides essential services to the East Maui community such as Internet access and magazine and newspaper publications.
"We have no other option because of our geographic area," Carroll said.
After hearing the majority rule in Hana's favor, Carroll said: "We're thrilled."
Board of Education members also agreed to save four other libraries targeted for closure. The closures had been proposed as a cost-cutting measure by the Hawaii State Public Library System. BOE members told state Librarian Richard Burns to look at other ways to save money.
