MANELE, Lanai - A $13.7-million project to build facilities at Manele Small Boat Harbor was dedicated Wednesday in ceremonies led by state Sen. J. Kalani English, whose 6th District includes Lanai.
New harbor amenities include a restroom, an administrative office, paved access roads and parking areas, waterlines, fire hydrants, a sewage pump station and a fuel-dispensing facility, among other improvements.
"Manele Harbor is the gateway to Lanai," English said, adding that he estimated 80 percent of the traffic on and off the island goes through Manele. "It is mostly local people who use the ferry to Lahaina. The community here deserves a facility that is safe, comfortable and convenient."
Mark Tracy, president of Valley Isle Marine Center in Wailuku, was among the boating industry executives to attend the dedication.
"The new facility is fantastic," he said. "It is a beautiful and functional design. It makes the harbor look like a quaint village. The covered waiting area reminds me of a 19th-century train depot."
The project's funding came mostly from the Federal Transit Administration, which provided $10.6 million, while the state put in $3.1 million.
The project was designed by Bow Engineering and Development Inc. and built by Maui Master Builders Inc. Construction beginning in November 2006.
English said some landscaping and disabled access work remains to be done.
"This was a significant project so we always expected that it would take some time," he said.
