ILWU announces its endorsements

WAILUKU - The International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 142 has announced its candidate endorsements for the Sept. 20 primary election, adding a statement in support of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"The ILWU's political action committee has worked hard to evaluate candidates fairly on the issues and their voting records and feels confident we have endorsed candidates who have strong core values, integrity and the ability to best serve Maui's working families," said Maui Division Director William Kennison.

Although the Hawaii primary ballot does not include the national race, the union added its endorsement to the announcement on local races.

"The ILWU will be supporting Senator Barack Obama," said Maui Division Political Action Chairperson Jason Medeiros. "We believe that Senator Obama is the best candidate for working families. There were several key issues that led the ILWU to endorse the senator, including bringing our troops safely home from Iraq, supporting the rights of workers to join unions without employer threats, and making quality, affordable health care available to all Americans."
