WAILUKU – Moloka'i General Hospital would get $1.6 million for renovations and Kaunakakai Elementary School would get $700,000 for repairs under the Senate version of the state budget for this year.
The Moloka'i projects were highlighted by Sen. J. Kalani English, whose 6th District includes East Maui, L_na'i, and Moloka'i.
The funds for phase II of the Moloka'i Hospital upgrades will be used to renovate the 40-year-old hospital building and allow the hospital to centralize all inpatient care in its main building.
An additional $500,000 has been appropriated by Maui County, and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs has agreed to contribute a dollar for every two dollars of state funding, up to $500,000. Efforts are under way to raise an additional $3 million from private donors.
The Kauanakakai Elementary renovations will include painting the school's interior and exterior, replacing louvers and light fixtures, and upgrading electrical systems to allow installation of air conditioners.
English said he was inspired to ask for the funding after a Molokai teacher complained temperatures could reach 90 degrees in her classroom. A parent had donated an air conditioner, but the classroom electrical system was unable to provide adequate power.
"I'm happy that my Senate colleagues recognize the importance of these repairs to Moloka'i children and their families," English said in a statement.
