HONOLULU - State Sen. J. Kalani English has received one of three Distinguished Alumni Awards from Hawaii Pacific University.
English, a former Maui County Council member who represents Maui's 6th Senatorial District, received the Professional Achievement Award April 16 at a ceremony held at the Waialae Country Club on Oahu.
The university cited his numerous and varied achievements in areas such as environment, culture, business, arts and human rights. It noted that he has been involved in local Native Hawaiian issues as well as matters relating to the Pacific region for the United Nations.
English graduated from HPU in 1989.
The awards are named for Paul C.T. Loo, one the university's founders.
Also recognized were Iven Sugai, who received Alumni Service Award, and Blagovets Stephanov, recipient of the Young Alumni Award.
