Regarding Steve Baker's March 16 letter about on Sen. J. Kalani English and other legislators attempting to pass anti-war resolutions:
The fact Sen. English has a world view and United Nations experience only makes his viewpoint that much more valid. Mr. Baker apparently isn't aware of Kalani's work to support the appropriation of funding for drug counselors to treat incarcerated women on Maui, his work to prevent land fills over aquifers, the establishment of the Emergency Environmental Work Force or any other work these legislators accomplish.
My experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in a Muslim country, Tunisia 1972-73, indicates a positive alternative for winning over Muslims is for America to lead an international coalition dealing with poverty, health and medical care, clean water, the environment, agriculture and economic revitalization. This would be a battle all Americans could support and it would prevent extremism by confronting the root causes of fanaticism and terrorism.
It is in Hawaii's economic interest that we find alternatives to war in the Middle East. The first war with Iraq resulted in a long-term recession for Hawaii. Why would our legislators not be concerned about the economic effects of war on Maui and Hawaii? That's why we elected them.
