HANA — Democratic state Sen. J. Kalani English will seek the newly configured 6th Senatorial District seat this year.
The new district boundaries include East Maui, Upcountry, Molokai and Lanai.
The freshman senator’s current district encompasses Kahului, Wailuku, Paia and Upcountry.
According to the state Office of Elections, the 6th District seat will be open for a two-year term. Beginning in 2005, the seat will be available for a four-year term.
English said the new district is a “canoe district” representing more than one island in the Senate.
“I realize the challenges of representing constituents on different islands — remember, I served two terms on the Maui County Council, which represents all four islands of Maui County,” English said. “We need strong representation at the Capitol on Oahu to have ‘Neighbor Island’ voices heard.”
English says he has a background in diplomacy and works as an international business consultant.
English’s campaign headquarters will be at the Kahului Shopping Center.
His campaign will kick off from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with a fund-raiser at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.
Tickets cost $25 each. The event will feature food and entertainment.
