Maui Superferry Meeting Gets Heated

They were loud and they were rowdy at the Baldwin High School auditorium on Maui.

About 300 residents gathered to testify on a bill to allow Superferry to run during an environmental study.

"I was born on oahu, I have family and friends and family on Oahu and they are not coming to rape and pillage Maui," exclaimed one Superferry supporter amid "boos" and shouts for her to go home.

The boos often drowned out Superferry supporters as they testified.

"The world is watching," she paused to let the shouting subside. "The world is watching," she started again," and we don't need a bigger black eye! Let us have the Superferry back!"

"I was lucky enough to travel on Superferry," said another supporter. "I drove my pick-up onto the ship and what a great way to go."

While they spoke with conviction, supporters at the meeting were few and far between. The majority thinks the court's ruling should be upheld. Some don't want superferry at all.

"On Oahu, there's nothing so they come here, proliferate through Maui and we'll be so encroached upon it's not even funny," said a Maui resident.

The fate of Superferry could be down to the final days. Lawmakers are ready to convene a special session Wednesday and some of them are already worried about what that could mean for the future.

"This is really a watershed moment in Hawaiian politics," said Sen. Kalani English. "If we do this, we'll be opening up the flood-gates for many other constitutional challenges and perhaps leading us to a constitutional crisis."

There is one more of these meetings, that's Tuesday on the Big Island at Kealakehe High School in Kona at 3 p.m.
